Occasionally we find a textbook that is beautifully clear in its presentation but is not generally available for purchase. Concepts and Challenges in Physical Science is just such a book. It takes what we usually consider difficult information and presents it in bite-size pieces with simple explanations that even pre-schoolers and science-intimidated moms can understand. We use it as the foundation for both Year One Chemistry and Year Four Physics. This book, more than anything else, brought an understanding of chemistry and physics to our family. Now that it is available for purchase directly from us, we are excited to be able to provide the reading outlines to match our curriculum units. The sections are labeled PS.

We like this book for the current scientific information and for the pictures. However, the labs are involved and the book is not essential. It is designed and edited by DK and published by The Reader's Digest. How Science Works is primarily used during the physics year (Year 4 of the Four Year Plan), but we use a small amount of material from it during the chemistry year (Year 1 of the Four Year Plan). The pages are labeled HSW in the list below.
Note: We originally assumed the Density sections would be part of Year Four Physics, but later found that they did not fit there very well. We moved 11-6 and 11-7 to week 3, and squeezed Density (5-1 through 5-5) into week 4 of Year One, Unit One.
